Taking a break from the daily pursuit of bacteria, David, our MD at Aqua Engineering, recently embarked on an exciting journey as the Captain and active team member of Morecambe’s walking football team.

Walking football is a modified version of the beautiful game that emphasises fun, camaraderie, and physical activity. Played at a slower pace, it allows people of all abilities, aged 50 and above, to enjoy the sport they love without the intensity of traditional football. With a focus on skill, strategy, and social interaction, walking football is a fantastic way to stay active and engage in a healthy and inclusive activity.

Morecambe's Passion for Walking Football

Formed approximately 12 months before the Covid lockdown, Morecambe’s walking football team has become a vibrant and inclusive community with around 40 dedicated members. The team welcomes individuals of all genders and abilities, creating an environment where everyone can enjoy the sport and feel included. Instead of participating in league competitions, they engage in friendly matches among themselves three times a week. Additionally, the team takes part in occasional friendly games, as well as taking part in one or two tournaments each year.

MD, David up for the challenge!

David and the team recently had the exciting opportunity to participate in a tournament in Spain. The event was organised by Formentera Walking Football and participation was by invitation only. Spain is renowned for its fervor and passion for the sport, with numerous local leagues and teams found across the country. The invitation-only tournaments offer a thrilling and exclusive opportunity to showcase talent and enjoy the spirited atmosphere.

During the tournament, Morecambe’s walking football team demonstrated their skills and competitive spirit, playing a total of five games in a single day. Their performance was commendable, with a victory, a draw, and three close defeats, where their heaviest loss was a narrow 2-0. The winners of the tournament were none other than the formidable Athletic Bilbao team, who secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Morecambe. It is worth noting that the Athletic Bilbao team boasts strong affiliations with their renowned regular league football club and is known for their exceptional organisation, featuring a Manager and a couple of ex-professionals on the team. The trip was a fantastic experience, marked by the well-organised competition and the opportunity for Morecambe’s team to showcase their skills and compete against high-level opponents.

Massive congratulations to David and the rest of the Morecambe team on what was a great effort!
